November is Family Violence Prevention Month in Alberta. Calgary Counselling Centre’s Dr. Robbie Babins-Wagner, CEO of Calgary Counselling Centre, shared information about family violence prevention and treatment in the November 4, 2015 edition of the Calgary Herald.
The editorial titled ‘Babins-Wagner: We can all help end family violence’ explains that as the economic downturn continues, and individual and family stress amplifies, there may be an increase in cases of domestic abuse in Calgary. This is particularly important as Alberta continues to have one of the highest incidents of family violence in the country. Pay attention and notice when people we encounter may be showing signs of being the victim of violence in the home. If you are concerned about someone you know, you can help by connecting them with appropriate resources.
The Calgary Counselling Centre offers effective domestic abuse therapy for men and women who have been abusive in an intimate relationship, as well as therapy for men and women who have experienced abuse in an intimate relationship.
“Effective domestic abuse treatment requires a focus on safety, responsibility and accountability, making healthy choices and managing difficult emotions” Babins-Wagner reminds us in the story. “We contact the victim and work with them around their specific needs, including safety. We then develop a treatment plan.”
