Calgary Counselling Centre is delighted to announce that we were the grand prize winner of the 2014 Field Law Community Fund Program for our Defy Depression initiative! Calgary Counselling Centre was one of three Southern Alberta winners out of over 80 applicants who applied for the 2014 grant. We received $15,000 in funding to help launch our Defy Depression initiative.
The Defy Depression initiative, which will formally be announced in the fall, is a comprehensive multi-year project based on a four pillar approach focusing on Activation, Access, Training & Education, and Research.
Here is a brief explanation of the four pillars:
- Activation making the community aware of the growing issue of depression through screening and engagement campaigns such as Depression Screening Day as well as expanding partnerships
- Access will ensure fee assistance subsidies are available for everyone and expand program delivery
- Training and education will consist of developing a community of practice and sharing our results with other mental health service providers, policy makers, and decision makers
- Research will consist of the ongoing evaluation of initiative and programs, and literature reviews to identify current gaps
The problem of depression is far bigger than most people can even imagine. 1 in 5 people are clinically depressed and 46% of Albertans experience depression or anxiety. Depression affects everyone. It does not discriminate based on age, gender, personality, economic, ethnic, or geographic position. The stigma around this treatable mental health issue is preventing people from seeking help.
We want to thank everyone who voted and helped make this a possibility. With your support we are able to continue to Defy Depression and create a stronger, healthier community and economy.
The Defy Depression initiative will impact and benefit the entire community. Please contact us if you would like to hear more about this life-changing initiative at 403-691-5904.
