This live webinar provides an overview of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), a growing clinical and public health concern. The course discusses the functions and underlying neurobiological mechanisms and identifies the related risk factors and signs. It provides practical guidance to risk assessment and immediate risk management for service providers in a community-based setting. The webinar is interactive: participants will have designated time to ask questions and initiate discussions.

About the instructor

Sarah Rosenfeld, MSW, RSW is a Registered Social Worker with a Bachelor of Social Work from McGill University and a Master of Social Work (Clinical Specialization) from the University of Calgary. She has over twenty years’ experience working in mental health, child protection, and health care settings. Sarah has held numerous counselling and leadership positions in the not-for-profit sector. Currently, she is the Associate Director of Counselling at Calgary Counselling Centre. Sarah regularly provides accredited courses to helping professionals, and customized workshops to organizations in crisis de-escalation.

Learning objectives

After attending this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Define non-suicidal self-injury and list its most common forms.

  2. Explain the functions of self-harm.

  3. Identify the risk factors and signs that would make you think that the client may self-harm.

  4. Compare and contrast suicidal and non-suicidal self-harm.

  5. Apply appropriate risk assessment and risk management strategies and techniques in their practice.

  1. Functions of NSSI – Why do people self-harm?

  2. Risk factors and signs – Who self-harms? When to think of it?

  3. Risk assessment – Who is at risk of serious injury/suicide?

  4. Immediate risk management – What to do?

Registered participants will receive an electronic course handout at least 24 hours before the course date.

This live webinar is fully interactive. Attendees may ask questions throughout the presentation and there is a dedicated Questions and Discussion session at the end of the webinar.

Registration fee:

  • $25 without CE Credit Certificate

  • $30 with CE Credit Certificate

This course is free of charge (including CE credit) for Calgary Counselling Centre staff, interns, and residents.

Cancellations received up to 24 hours prior to the start of the webinar are eligible for a partial refund. A $5 administration fee will be charged; the remaining amount from the registration fee will be refunded.

Course completion & CE information

Course completion requirements: To earn CE credit, participants must attend the whole webinar and complete an online anonymous course evaluation. Web links to the online evaluation form will be distributed by e-mail, and the completed evaluation must be submitted online within 7 days. No partial credit is allowed.

Certificates of credit will be emailed within 10 business days of course completion and evaluation.

Calgary Counselling Centre, provider # 1758, is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved as ACE providers. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. Calgary Counselling Centre maintains responsibility for this course. ACE provider approval period: 11/19/2021–11/19/2024. Social workers completing this course receive 1 continuing education credit.
