This live webinar provides a practical approach to crisis de-escalation. It focuses on the techniques clinicians may use in a community-based setting to manage threatening, aggressive or agitated client behaviour. The course will discuss the principles, strategies and techniques used in de-escalation. The webinar is interactive: participants will have designated time to ask questions and initiate discussions.

Target audience: social workers and clinical psychologists

Content level: Beginning

Credit:  1 continuing education credit.

This is recognized as 1 ACSW Category A continuing education credit in Alberta, Canada.

About the instructor

Sarah Rosenfeld, MSW, RSW is a Registered Social Worker with a Bachelor of Social Work from McGill University and a Master of Social Work (Clinical Specialization) from the University of Calgary. She has over twenty years’ experience working in mental health, child protection, and health care settings. Sarah has held numerous counselling and leadership positions in the not-for-profit sector. Currently, she is the Associate Director of Counselling at Calgary Counselling Centre. Sarah regularly provides accredited courses to helping professionals, and customized workshops to organizations.

Learning objectives

After attending this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Define de-escalation.

  2. Explain the principles and specific strategies used in de-escalation.

  3. Compare and contrast the two main types of aggressive behaviour (“hot and cold”) and the de-escalation tactics used in their management.

  4. Apply relevant de-escalation techniques in their practice.

  3. Ten domains of de-escalation: the “toolbox”

  4. Application of strategies and techniques appropriate for the situation

Course interaction

This live webinar is fully interactive. Attendees may ask questions throughout the presentation and there is a dedicated 15-minute Questions and Discussion session at the end of the webinar.

Course completion & CE information

Course completion requirements: To earn CE credit, participants must attend the whole webinar and complete an online anonymous course evaluation. Web links to the online evaluation form will be distributed by e-mail, and the completed evaluation must be submitted online within 7 days. No partial credit is allowed.

Certificates of credit will be emailed within 10 business days of course completion and evaluation.

Calgary Counselling Centre, provider # 1758, is approved as an ACE provider to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period:11/19/2021–11/19/2024. Social workers completing this course receive 1 general continuing education credit.
