Domestic Abuse

Domestic abuse has many facets, which is why we have designed groups to address each specific aspect of it. We offer effective change-oriented therapy for men and women who have been abusive in an intimate relationship, as well as change-oriented therapy for men and women who have experienced abuse in an intimate relationship. There are four core groups – two for male participants, and two for female participants.

Groups for men and women who have experienced abuse:

You Are Not Alone:

This program is for women who have experienced violence in an intimate relationship.

Turn for the Better:

Responsible Choices for Men:

This program is designed to help men understand and change their aggressive abusive behaviour and outbursts.

Responsible Choices for Women:

Themes for all groups include:

  • Impact of abuse on self, on families and on relationships
  • Gender roles and expectation and beliefs that support violence
  • Experiencing affect
  • Healthy relationships
  • Empathy
  • Anger versus violence
  • Facing up to shame
  • Commitment to non-violence
  • Relationship with self
  • Safety plans
  • Maintaining change

The client must first have a one-on-one session with their counsellor to assess their individual case and evaluate if this program is a good fit.
