Creating joy this holiday season, no matter your circumstances

The holiday season often comes with images of large family gatherings, sparkling celebrations, and picture-perfect moments. But in reality, not every holiday looks the same, and that’s okay. Whether you’re spending the season alone, with friends, or simply navigating unique circumstances, you can still find joy. By shifting your mindset and creating meaningful traditions that work for you, you can make the holidays special—no matter what your situation looks like.

Find joy in small moments

The holidays don’t have to be elaborate to feel magical. Often, it’s the little things that bring the most comfort and joy.

  • Create a cozy environment: Light a candle, play holiday music, or decorate your space in a way that makes you feel warm and festive.

  • Indulge in your favorites: Make a special meal or bake cookies you love, even if it’s just for yourself. Treating yourself is a way of showing care and appreciation for who you are.

  • Start each day with gratitude: Writing down three things you’re thankful for can help shift your perspective and make your days brighter.

Make your own traditions

Traditions don’t have to follow a specific formula—they can be as unique as you are.

  • Reimagine old traditions: If you have fond memories of something from the past, like watching a favorite holiday movie, bring that into your present.

  • Create something new: Maybe it’s trying out a new recipe, taking a holiday walk to look at decorations, or crafting something seasonal. Traditions are simply acts you enjoy doing again and again.

  • Add meaning: Think about what brings you the most happiness or peace and incorporate that into your holiday.

Give back and connect

One of the most fulfilling ways to bring joy into your holidays is by giving to others. Volunteer opportunities, like helping out at a food bank, wrapping gifts for a local charity, or assisting with a community meal, offer a sense of purpose and connection. If you’re looking for a simple way to brighten someone’s day, reach out to a friend or family member with a heartfelt note, a phone call, or even just a small gesture like offering a smile to someone you meet in passing. Even small acts of kindness can make a big impact and help spread joy throughout your community.

Embrace the unexpected

The holidays don’t have to look a certain way to be meaningful. In fact, stepping away from traditional expectations can give you the freedom to redefine what this time of year means for you. If something doesn’t go as planned, be flexible and focus on what feels right for you in the moment.

Whether you find joy in solitude, reflecting on your goals for the upcoming year, or trying something new, embracing what comes can make the season even more fulfilling. Celebrate whatever moments bring a smile to your face—whether big or small.

Finding meaning in the season

At its heart, the holiday season is about connection—whether that’s connecting with others, with yourself, or with the spirit of giving and gratitude. By leaning into what makes you happy and prioritizing self-compassion, you can create a holiday that feels uniquely yours.

The joy of the season isn’t found in the size of your gatherings or the number of presents under the tree—it’s in the moments, traditions, and choices that bring light to your life.
