Close to 9,500 people participated in 2015 National Depression Screening Day, more than ever before.
For the tenth year, and with the support of our growing community and corporate partners, Calgary
Counselling Centre held National Depression Screening Day (NDSD). NDSD is a week-long campaign to raise awareness of depression and encouraging those who need it to seek help. This is achieved by providing a free and anonymous online screening test.
“This year was of particular interest because we know that the downturn in the economy is causing a lot of stress and anxiety for many individuals and families,” says Dr. Robbie Babins-Wagner, CEO, Calgary Counselling Centre. “The online screening test is an excellent resource for people to learn if they have depressive symptoms so they can begin to address it.”
The test, posted on Calgary Counselling Centre’s website, is designed not to offer a diagnosis but rather to point out to participants the presence or absence of depressive symptoms and offers a referral for further evaluation, as necessary.
2015 NDSD highlights
- 9,478 people took the test from across Canada
- 633 took the test in French
- 40.1% were recommended for further evaluation of depressive symptoms
- 15.6% of participants strongly recommended for evaluation
- 44.4% respondents did not indicate depressive symptoms and were not recommended for further depression evaluation
Calgary Counselling Centre also joined Calgary Chamber of Commerce on October 8 for a breakfast event to encourage conversation on how to effectively break down the barriers of mental illness in the workplace. The breakfast
featured speakers passionate about mental health, including Adam Legge, President and CEO of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce, Dr. Robbin Babins-Wagner, CEO of Calgary Counselling Centre, Ian Wild, Executive VP, ATB Corporate Financial Services and Elaine Chin, Chief Wellness Officer, TELUS.
